One area of the home that is "up close and personal" is the bathroom. While it is very easy to be content with the function of the bathroom, giving it a makeover can enhance the experience and be a rewarding remodeling experience. For instance, changing the vanity top and lavatory sink, a different mirror and light fixture is an abbreviated makeover that can make all the difference in your bathroom.
Vanity tops, bathroom sinks, mirrors and light fixtures can be purchased at most homestores off the shelf, loaded into an SUV or truck, and transported to your home and staged for the transformation. A word or two here about opening your boxed-up selections BEFORE you purchase them. INSPECT ALL parts closely. Confirm that all installation directions and hardware are included. After you have inspected the items and are satisfied with their condition, close the box and wrap it with shrink wrap letting the store employees help prepare the items for the ride home. This process is critical. Otherwise, after you have delivered the items to your home and unpacked them only to discover there is something missing or broken, the store may tell YOU to return it for exchange or refund if they don't have another usable item. At that point your bathroom makeover design may have to be altered to accommodate the change. Another way is to have the items delivered by the store delivery truck. This method gives you the opportunity to un-box the items, inspect the delivery BEFORE the delivery person leaves, and if there is a problem let THEM load it back up and take it for the return or exchange.
It is my experience that to change all the parts for a single bathroom sink, cabinet base, mirror, and light fixture, an efficient contractor will use approximately 20 manhours and the labor cost to budget will be approximately $1,000. There will also be the cost of the plumber at approximately $200 to prep the bathroom cabinet before removal and to connect the new items after installation.
The process will involve potential drywall repair, sanding, wall texture, and painting. Select the bathroom paint you will be using and purchase the quantity to be used. After removing the existing bathroom fixtures, you'll make a trip to the landfill or find another means of disposing of the construction debris to complete your bathroom makeover.
